Soundproofing a window doesn’t require replacement windows. You can install soundproof window inserts over your existing windows, often with greater efficiency and less cost. All windows wear out over time, and even with maintenance, eventually need to be replaced, but it’s likely that your windows still have plenty of life left in them.
If soundproofing is the main reason you’re looking for new windows, consider the following questions:
- Do I need to replace my windows yet?
- Are soundproof windows better than soundproof window inserts?
- How much will replacement windows cost?
Do I Need to Replace My Windows Yet?
Most windows last about 20 years. This doesn’t mean they’re going to break after their lifespan is over – it just means that they’ll lose their effectiveness at controlling temperature, blocking noise, and keeping out drafts. This varies depending on a few things:
- The material of the window
- Your climate
- How well the window has been maintained
- How well it was initially installed
The best way to know the lifespan of your window is to look at its documentation. If you don’t have that available, try searching for it online.
Often, you’ll notice a significant improvement in the function of your window by simply resealing it (i.e. replacing the caulk). You may also need to replace the wood around the window if there has been some kind of damage.
If your house is old and your windows are truly outdated – like single-pane windows from the 80s – replacement windows are definitely the way to go. Otherwise, soundproof window inserts are a better solution. Either way, you can expect to also see improvements in your energy bill. Installing window inserts increases thermal efficiency.
If maximum effectiveness is your only concern, replace your windows and install soundproof window inserts.

Are Soundproof Windows Better than Window Inserts?
First, understand that these two options are not mutually exclusive. You can indeed have a soundproof window with a soundproof window insert. The most cost-effective option, however, is a standard double-pane window with a soundproof window insert.
Let’s consider some data.
Soundproofing materials are measured by their STC rating. STC stands for Sound Transmission Class, and is a scientifically measured value that describes how well a window prevents sound from passing through it when installed properly.
Double pane windows have an average STC rating of 29 on their own. With a Sun and Sound Windows soundproof window insert installed, this increases to 48.
For comparison, Andersen windows E-Series Double Laminated fixed windows have an STC rating of 40.

How Much Do Replacement Windows Cost?
Home Depot has an excellent guide on the cost of replacement windows. The low-end price for vinyl double hung windows, with installation, is $478 per window. For wood windows, it’s $1,311 per window. The exact cost to replace windows depends, of course, on your type of window, its shape and size, and the labor involved.
If you’re able to do the construction yourself, new windows can be as cheap as a couple hundred dollars. This also comes with the cost of related materials.
